Malden Fas Check reopens after fixing health code violations
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The manager of Fas Chek in Malden is relieved to be back in business following a two-day closure by health department officials.
Inspectors closed the grocery on Monday due to violations of 36 food and safety codes, said Anita Ray, director of environmental health for the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.
She said inspectors found numerous violations, with plumbing issues as the main problem.
"Their grease trap backed up in the meat room," she said. "They thought they had it unstopped but it was stopped up again on Tuesday. There were a lot of other issues."
A summary of violations on the Health Department website listed 12 critical violations and 24 non-critical violations. Among problems listed were: "raw pork stored above cheese in a cooler," "meat grinder not clean to sight," and "pipe leaking in meat room, water spraying on meat trays."
Inspectors returned to the store on Wednesday afternoon to find things in order, and the store re-opened about 2:30 p.m., said Fay Butts, store manager.
Butts, 84, has worked at the store for 43 years. She said nearly every business gets cited occasionally, including hers. However, she does not recall the store ever being closed.
She said equipment was getting old and difficult to repair. That made it hard to find parts and get things quickly fixed.
"We had to get a piece for this and that," she said. "It's worth it. Equipment is old and expensive to buy. You just do the best you can."
She said faithful customers called during the time the store was closed.
"Customers called to see if I was all right," she said. "There are generally nice people here."
She said closing the store for a couple of days made it hard on the business.
"It hurts you really bad," she said. "Business is a little slow anyway. The economy isn't that good."
Still, she has no hard feelings toward Health Department inspectors.
"They're just doing their job, too."
