A Rand man was arrested after walking toward a law enforcement officer with a sword, said Cpl. B.D. Humphreys of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office.
Captain J.S. Bailes was patrolling along Raven Drive in Rand about 10 p.m. Tuesday when he saw a man walking in the area. The man was later identified as Chaten Samuel Nelson, 35, of Starling Drive.
When the officer saw him, Nelson reached around his shoulder and grabbed a sword handle, Humphreys said. He said Nelson had a 4-foot-long Samurai sword in a sheath strapped to his back.
Bailes drew his pistol and repeatedly told Nelson to put down the sword until he followed orders. Nelson was then arrested.
A search revealed that Nelson was carrying several edged weapons, including a straight razor. He also had several drugs with no valid prescriptions, Humphreys said.Nelson was charged with brandishing a deadly weapon and simple possession.
