He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Sigman said firefighters have dealt with loss and would do as they always do — stick together to weather it.
"The guys will stick together as a family and we'll get through it," Sigman said.
The house was a total loss, Sigman said. No other injuries were reported. Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office were at the scene with Kanawha sheriff's deputies. Sigman said he could not say if it was suspicious as no cause had been determined.
Appleton is the third Kanawha County firefighter to die in the line of duty in the last four years. All have been volunteers.
Donnie Adkins, 32, of the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department was killed when he was swept away in March 2010 during a swift water rescue attempt in Raleigh County. His crew took 15 people and three dogs to safety and was attempting a fourth rescue when the boat capsized in the cold, swift floodwaters.
Joey King, 61, of the Davis Creek-Ruthdale Volunteer Fire Department, fell to his death from the Steven Wayne Smith Memorial Bridge along Corridor G while trying to spot a fire in December 2011. Heavy fog and smoke limited visibility that night as firefighters searched for the source, which turned out to be railroad ties that caught fire when a box was set ablaze.
