Dunbar's newly elected city council members elected a council president and gave raises to hourly city employees, police officers and firefighters at a regular meeting Monday.
Dana Hayes of Ward 2 won the majority in the council president election and will replace Gail Harper in the position. When new mayor Terry Greenlee must be absent from a meeting, the council president will fill in.
Council also passed the second reading of three ordinances increasing wages for several city employees.
Hourly employees' wages will increase by 35 cents per hour.
New hourly wages for police officers are as follows: $14.02 per hour for probationary patrolmen, $14.72 for patrolmen, $15.82 for corporals, $15.77 for sergeants and $16.32 for lieutenants.
Firefighters' wages will increase by 65 cents per hour.
Police Chief Earl Whittington warned residents against using Class C illegal fireworks during July 4 celebrations. Such fireworks include Roman candles, M80s, bottle rockets and cherry bombs.
