Free family movie to be screened at UC this weekend

By From staff reports

The University of Charleston Riverfront Lawn will transform into the yellow brick road on Saturday, July 13, as UC hosts a free showing of "Oz the Great and Powerful" beginning at 9 p.m.

Residents of the Kanawha Valley and beyond are invited to bring their blankets and lawn chairs to take in this new Disney classic, which will be shown on the UC Riverfront Lawn closest to Eddie King Gym. Traditional movie drinks and snacks will be available for purchase at event.

The University is hosting the movie night as part of the Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau's "Gateway to the Jamboree" initiative, which has coordinated several activities around the city to welcome visitors attending the Boy Scouts of America National Scout Jamboree. A complete list of activities can be found here. "Oz the Great and Powerful" is based on the story of Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes, however, when he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity -- and even a bit of wizardry -- Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
