CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A local daycare is under scrutiny after a 4-year-old boy wandered away and was found wandering the halls of Marshall University's Graduate College in South Charleston.
South Charleston police were called earlier this week to the graduate college after the boy was found walking in the halls without an adult, said Bob Houck, assistant chief of police.
A person at the college called nearby South Charleston Enrichment Center and asked if they were missing any children, he said. A woman from the daycare came over and picked up the boy.
Houck said the daycare never called the police and that the only call they received was from the college.
Patrolman C.A. Boner went to the daycare to find out more about what happened, but was told the boy's father already had picked him up.
The stories varied as to how long the child was unaccounted for. The daycare told police the boy was gone 20 minutes while those at the college said it had been at least 40 minutes, Houck said.
The assistant chief said it was his understanding that the children were out on the playground for recess and had gone back inside in two groups.
