Two firefighters were taken to an area hospital Monday morning after they were overcome by heat exhaustion while fighting a suspicious blaze in East Bank, said Kanawha County Fire Coordinator C.W. Sigman.
The fire was reported at 11 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Williams Street, he said. When emergency crews arrived on the scene bystanders offered different reports. Some said the house was vacant while others said people were trapped inside.
When firefighters arrived on the scene the floor of the structure was collapsing and it appeared the fire had started in the basement, Sigman said.
There was no evidence found of anyone being inside the house. Two firemen, including one from Pratt and one from East Bank, were transported to a hospital about 12:30 a.m. when they were overcome by heat exhaustion. One was treated and released while the second remained hospitalized early Monday, he said. The fire is considered suspicious in nature.
