Jerry Alderson, minister at Park Avenue Church of Christ for more than four decades and host of a popular Sunday morning radio show, is moving to Nashville.
Alderson, 72, was only 29 when he accepted the position of preacher at the church. He never expected to stay in one spot so long but found he was comfortable there.
He launched a radio show nearly 40 years ago called "Not By Bread Alone," broadcast each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. on WCHS.
At the church, his post as preacher will be filled by Steve Fox, who is his best friend. In this denomination, the church leader is known as minister or preacher. Fox is a former associate at Park Avenue Church of Christ, located at the corner of Park Avenue and Main Street on Charleston's West Side.
The radio show will continue with new speaker Joseph Pauley, who is preacher at Belle Church of Christ. Alderson is thankful that the show will continue to be aired.
When he did the show, Alderson tried to use a conversational style with listeners as he shared scriptures.
"I couldn't count on somebody on the other side having access to a Bible," he said.
On his final radio show, he encouraged listeners to appreciate a speaker while studying scripture on their own.
"There is authority in the Bible itself," he said. "Don't take my word for it. Go back to the source."
In his final sermon at the church, he expressed his appreciation for the leaders who served as role models for him many years ago. He said the future of the church depends upon young families who bring their children to worship.
