CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Some the area's best skaters will present a free performance this weekend at South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena.
The Competitors Exhibition is set for 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday with performances by skaters who have excelled in their respective areas, said Vicky Robb, a coach with Charleston Figure Skating Club.
Aside from offering entertainment for the audience, the event allows skaters to practice before a crowd.
"It gets them in shape to compete," Robb said.
Among performers will be skaters who have competed on the national level.
Ice dancing pair Caroline Leadmon, 15, of Hurricane High School, and Jacob Schedl, 17, of George Washington, finished second in the U.S. Figure Skating Classic in Salt Lake City on Sept. 15. They were also national dance competitors in 2011 and 2012.
Devan Tighe, 15, of George Washington, competed in the National Solo Dance Championships on Sept. 21 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Marlo Weisberg, 14, of Charleston Catholic, competed in the National Solo Dance Series in several locations this year. Maddy Dean, 15, of Nitro High has competed in August in the National Showcase Event in Bourne, Mass. Elena Compton, 14, of South Charleston High, was a regional competitor in 2012 and has another regional event coming up this month.
The audience will enjoy a flashy show on Sunday as performers skate in costume to music and offer a variety of styles, Robb said.
This marks the second year for the Competitors Exhibition.
"The only complaint we got last year was people wanted it to be longer," said Robb, who added performers will present extra numbers this year.
