CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Kanawha County Public Library is keeping up with the digital age.
Beginning Monday, the library will provide free, legal music downloads through Freegal Music Service. Patrons will have access to more than 7 million songs from more than 28,000 music labels, including all Sony Music content.
"We are excited to offer downloadable music in addition to the ebooks and audiobooks we already have available for our cardholders," said Toni Blessing, adult services manager.
Patrons with a library card and a PIN number can download three songs each week at no cost. The songs can be downloaded to a Mac, PC, MP3 player, Kindle, Nook, iPhone, iPad and other select electronic devices. Unlike the audiobook and ebook downloads, the music downloads do not expire.
"Many libraries across the country are currently using the Freegal Music Service," Blessing said. "We thought it would be a great opportunity so we agreed to a set price and are moving forward with getting the service up and running at 12:01 a.m. Monday.
Putnam and Marion counties have already implemented the Freegal Music Service.
Blessing said Library Ideas LLC, which is a global media company focused on libraries, offers the Freegal Music Service. The company states that Freegal is an effective method of drawing patrons to the library website and is a great end-user experience.
