Weather may have played a role in landing a Volkswagon Beetle in Coal River near Tornado, deputies say.
Sierra Harper, 20, of Tornado was driving north on Coal River Road at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when she lost control of the Beetle and ran off the road. The car struck a tree and went over the embankment into the river where it landed on its top, Cpl. Brian Humphreys, Kanawha Sheriff's Department's spokesman.
Harper kicked at a window in the vehicle and shattered the glass to get out of the car and swim to shore. She was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital.
Tornado firefighters responded with Kanawha Deputy J.W. Eary to the scene. Kanawha County paramedics also responded.
Harper's Volkswagon was towed from the river.Deputies are investigating the crash, but Humphreys said it was raining when Harper went off the road, leading investigators to believe weather may have been a factor in the crash.
