The Kanawha Valley Collective is seeking participants for its eighth annual One Night Without a Home awareness event to be held 6 p.m. to midnight Nov. 15 at Magic Island.
Each year during the week prior to Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for Homeless co-sponsors National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. Throughout this week, communities take part in a nationwide effort to bring awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness.
Participants will be able to learn more about homelessness in the area and what the KVC is doing to end homelessness and find out how community members can help them achieve their goal.
As part of the event, backpacks filled with supplies will be collected and distributed to those in need. Residents, church groups and civic organizations are encouraged to build or sponsor a backpack. For a $20 donation, the KVC will purchase the needed supplies to create a backpack.
Suggested items include: wet wipes, small first-aid kits, lip balm, combs and brushes, deodorant, fingernail clippers/files, flashlights, garbage bags, rain ponchos, ready-to-eat food, small sewing kits, snacks (granola, crackers, toaster pastries), socks, tissues, toothbrushes and toothpaste, travel-size soap and shampoo and ziplock bags.
