Pratt mayor pleads guilty to drug charge
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The mayor of a small town in Kanawha County has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing prescription drugs.
The Charleston Gazette reports that Mayor Gary Fields will be on probation for six months. If he's not arrested for another six months after that, he can ask to have the conviction removed from his record.
Fields' court-appointed attorney proposed the plea and sentence, which Kanawha County Magistrate Joe Shelton accepted Thursday over the prosecutor's objection.
Pratt Town Council members have asked Fields to resign several times, but he has refused. They are considering starting the legal process to remove Fields from office.
Fields said Thursday that he still does not intend to resign. He is about eight months into his third two-year term.
