CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 2,000 Appalachian Power customers in Kanawha County were without power this morning after intense overnight thunderstorms.
A map of outages showed 2,377 Kanawha customers without power shortly after 8 a.m.
Also without power were 473 customers in Putnam County and 709 in Lincoln County.
Some schools, including Elk Elementary Center in Kanawha County, were closing because of the power loss.
The National Weather Service warned that the overnight rains combined with recent snow melting could result in high water and other water issues throughout the region.
The weather service also warned that wind gusts up to 45 mph are expected.
Showers remained likely today before 10 a.m. with conditions gradually becoming sunny with a high of 50 degrees.
