WINFIELD -- W.Va. -- A vacant lot beside K-Mart in Scott Depot has been rezoned with the hope of finding a tenant.
The lot along Teays Valley Road was zoned as suburban commercial, but commissioners voted to change it to high-density commercial upon the recommendation of the board of zoning appeals.
County Planner John Butterworth presented the petition from Yeager Land, LLC, to commissioners Tuesday morning, including a summary of comments by two concerned citizens.
According to Butterworth, an owner of a nearby business expressed concern over increased traffic in an area where traffic flow is already problematic.
Commissioner Steve Andes echoed that concern.
"I travel that," Andes said. "It's difficult even in the best of time. It's a traffic nightmare."
Commissioner Joe Haynes said traffic in that area was part of a study by the regional intergovernmental council, and one possible solution that has been proposed is a roundabout.
It would be up to the state division of highways to do anything about traffic on Teays Valley Road.
"I think probably our best chance to get that addressed is getting more development," Haynes said.
Butterworth reported that another resident, who lives in a neighborhood adjacent to the property, addressed the board of zoning appeals with concern over storm water runoff, Butterworth said.
