New pastor introduced at Hurricane church

The Rev. Thomas L. Quickel Jr., will be officially installed as the new pastor of Cross of Grace Lutheran Church in Hurricane at 4 p.m. Feb. 24.

"I feel God called me here," Quickel said. "This congregation has welcomed me with open arms. I have never been more warmly and kindly received. It's wonderful to be here. I love it already. I love the people and the beautiful land."

Bishop Ralph Dunkin will be on hand for the installation that will be attended by Lutheran pastors from throughout the state as well as other guests. The event is open to the public.

"We invite friends and neighbors to join us for worship," Quickel said.

Quickel came from Bristol, Tenn., to Putnam County earlier this month and has been getting to know the congregation.

About 40 people of all ages attend worship services and many of them have visions for the ministry of the church, he said.

"It's a bit overwhelming with so many good ideas," he said.

Quickel plans to help them focus as they move ahead and grow spiritually as well as in numbers.

His first Sunday was Feb. 3, shortly before the beginning of Lenten season.

Regular service times each week are Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. and worship with Holy Communion at 10:45 a.m.

Special services will be 7 p.m. Wednesdays throughout the Lenten season up until Easter. During Holy Week services will be held at 7 p.m. each day on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Regular worship times will be held on Easter Sunday.

Quickel will be speaker at the sunrise service with Teays Valley Ministerial Association 7 a.m. March 31 at Valley Park.

Quickel and wife, Kathryn, have four sons and seven grandchildren.

Quickel, 65, is a native of York, Pa. He is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., and Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa.

He has served churches in Plains, Ga.; Wardensville, W.Va.; Elberton, Ga.; and Bristol, Tenn.

Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, 30 Grace Drive in Hurricane, is part of the West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The church is located off exit 34 of Interstate 64 at Hurricane.
