Winfield Middle damaged after break-in
Winfield Middle School was broken into over the weekend when vandals destroyed computer equipment, sprayed shaving cream, busted a vending machine, and spilled water on the gym floor, Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese said.
Someone who saw boys running from the school in the dark just before 1 a.m. Sunday called police.
An officer from the Eleanor Police Department was first to arrive on the scene and was then assisted by Putnam County deputies.
An 18-year-old and two 17-year-olds were apprehended. Timothy Dwayne Basham II, 18, was charged with vandalism and juvenile complaints are being filed against the others, Deweese said.
"They basically entered the school and did a lot of damage and destruction of property," Deweese said. A damaged golf club found on the bleachers was apparently used to damage equipment, he said. Shaving cream was sprayed on desks and walls. A Pepsi machine was broken. Bows were shot in the gym and a floor scrubber was overturned and leaked water on the gym floor.
