The West Virginia Branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is planning a support group and walk kick-off event at the Valley Wave Pool Park Community Building in Hurricane from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.
All adults and children with Type 1 diabetes, as well as their family and friends, are encouraged to attend. The public is welcome as well.
Dr. Sarah Jarvis will speak about the psychological impacts of Type 1 diabetes and will lead a question-and-answer session.
There will be activities for children, snacks and opportunities to connect with other families in the local area affected by juvenile diabetes. This family networking is a key component to the outreach program being undertaken by the West Virginia Branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, according to a news release.
Family team packages and registration information also will be available Saturday for the Annual Walk For a Cure to be held at the state Capitol Complex on May 19.
The foundation has a Bag of Hope program in which newly diagnosed children are presented with a colorful backpack containing "Rufus" the stuffed diabetic bear, a meter and test strips and books, DVDs and other helpful information. Diabetic children who have not yet received a Bag of Hope will be given one at Saturday's event.
Reservations are requested and appreciated but not required. Please RSVP to Debbie Wertz by calling 304-562-5866 or by email at muttlove...@yahoo.com.
