Trailer overturns, spilling chemical compound on Buffalo Bridge
A tractor-trailer that overturned on U.S. 35 near the Buffalo Bridge in Putnam County was carrying about 4,000 gallons of gluteraldehyde, a toxic chemical compound used to sterilize and disinfect medical equipment.
Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carrie Bly says crews are in the process of bringing in a crane to turn the tractor-trailer upright. After they move the truck, HAZMAT crews will suit up and assess how many of the 80 50-gallon barrels are leaking, she said.
Diesel fuel has also leaked onto the road during the accident.
U.S. 35 is expected to be closed for the next six to eight hours for the cleanup, Bly said shortly before 2 p.m.
Sections of state routes 62 and 817 near the Buffalo Bridge entrance ramps will also remain closed during this time.
