Three businesses sell alcohol to minors in compliance check, sheriff says
WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Three out of 15 businesses sold alcohol to minors during an underage compliance check in Putnam County, said Sheriff Steve Deweese.
"Out of the 15 establishments, three sold to underage operatives, a 20 percent buy rate overall," he said. "Citations were issued to all three sales clerks selling alcohol to an operative."
The checks were conducted on Tuesday by the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department. Checks were funded by the Governor's Highway Safety Program.
Volunteers went into the businesses to purchase alcoholic beverages as law enforcement officers observed, Deweese said.
