The Putnam Farmers' Market will have special events for its Tomato Day starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Visit the market to read recipes, learn about canning tomatoes and celebrate with fun facts, contests and trivia. Bring in a tomato recipe that you love or a dish to share.
A tomato drop contest will be held for the kids. Children must make something that holds a regular-sized tomato in it. The device, holding a tomato, will be dropped from the top of a ladder. The objective is to keep the tomato intact. Tomatoes must be homegrown or purchased from a West Virginia farm.
There will also be a tomato contest, with certificates given to the winners of the following categories: Biggest Tomato, Ugliest Tomato, Prettiest Tomato and Most Colorful Tomato.
Bring in a jar of your best tomato salsa (cooked, fresh or fruit) to be judged in the salsa competition. Salsa entries must use locally grown produce and will be judged on presentation and taste.
Judging begins at 6:15 p.m. and all entries must be received no later than 6. There will be a small table set up in the grassy area in front of the picnic shelters to display your items.
