Hurricane church plans expansion for 100th anniversary

A more than $3 million expansion project is in the works at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane.

Plans call for adding a 23,000-square-foot family life center on two levels. The new addition would house a gymnasium, locker rooms, bathrooms, new classrooms, and elevator. The current kitchen is to be renovated and expanded from 600 to 750 square feet.

Targeted date to begin construction is May of 2015, the 100th anniversary of the church.

Cindy Daly, business manager for the church, said the current 35,000-square-foot facility is used frequently by many community groups as well as parishioners.

Sometimes a request for using the facility must be turned down because of the lack of space, she said.

The church has a day care for ages 6 weeks to 4 years as well as after-school and summer activities for children up to fifth grade.

"We also have an active youth group for sixth through 12th grade," she said. "We would like to start a ministry that involves sports."

A gymnasium would be a plus for youth as well as seniors who enjoy meeting for exercise, she said.

"We have a group of about 25 ladies age 65 to 85 who meet and walk around the sanctuary," she said. "Twelve times equals one mile. We want a gym for all ages."

The church is used for everything from Red Cross blood drives, conferences, and a quilting guild to PipeSounds Organ and West Virginia Symphony concerts. It is also a gathering spot for the Hurricane Volunteer Fire Department Christmas dinner and local school programs as well as weddings, baby showers and private parties.

Forrest Burdette also houses Hurricane Community Cupboard, a combined effort of several area churches to feed the hungry.

So far, a half million dollars has been raised toward the new building project which will cost an estimated $3.2 million, including furnishings.

The money is to be raised through contributions from parishioners as well as fundraising events.

The church offers a traditional and contemporary service each Sunday with a combined attendance of about 500. Additional worship services are held on Sunday and Wednesday evenings as well as small group activities. The lead pastor is the Rev. Dan Hogan.
