WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Putnam County Board of Education members recognized 10 career and technical students who recently won awards during a meeting Monday night.
Putnam Career and Technical Center Principal Mike Erwin praised the students, who won medals at the SkillsUSA National Conference and the Health Occupation Students of America National Conference, both in late June.
SkillsUSA was held in Kansas City, Mo., and HOSA was held in Nashville, Tenn.
In all, 51 students from West Virginia scored in the top 10 at SkillsUSA, and 24 of them were from Putnam County.
Carrie Easter, Brittani Elmore, Baley Rummell, Chelsea Shue, Danielle Smith, Kendra Wagner and Allison Oxley won gold medals as a team in the "Opening and Closing Ceremonies" competition, which evaluates team work and oral presentation skills.
Ashley Bowman and Abigail Crown won bronze medals for dental assisting in different age categories, and James Meade won a bronze medal for plumbing.
Christopher May won a gold medal for pharmacology at HOSA. Instructor Sally Harvey was also recognized as the 2013 West Virginia HOSA secondary adviser of the year.
In other news, board members:
* Approved the list of student transfers for the upcoming school year. Superintendent Chuck Hatfield reported that the number of transfers into Buffalo High School is up as the school begins its second year in a new building and with a new project-based curriculum.
Hatfield said enrollment at Buffalo is up to about 360. The building could accommodate about 450 students.
* Suspended maintenance worker Craig Cook for three days without pay for insubordination and willful neglect of duty.
* Voted to hold an additional meeting in August to fill more open positions before the school year begins. The first day for teachers is Aug. 19, and the first day for students is Aug. 22.
The Putnam County Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Monday of each month at the central office in Winfield. The board will hold an additional meeting Aug. 12. All meetings are open to the public.
