WINFIELD, W.Va. -- The Putnam County Health Department has settled another large debt on its road back to solvency.
The Putnam County Commission voted Tuesday morning to pay $133,278.33 to GDY LLC, owner of Teays Corporate Centre, over two fiscal years to settle a lease dispute.
The board of health voted to pay an additional $34,205.84 at its last meeting, bringing the total paid to more than $167,000.
But that's about half of what the company could demand under the terms of the lease, which was supposed to run through October 2014. The health department vacated its former space in June to try to cut costs.
Gary Young, president and CEO of G&G Builders, built and owns the Teays Corporate Centre and leases it under the company GDY LLC. He attended Tuesday's meeting to address the commission.
He said that he didn't seek out the health department as a tenant in 2010, and he was skeptical that they could afford the space.
"We actually delayed pursuit of the lease until budgets and so forth could be prepared," Young said.
