WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Officials are marking the opening of an adult drug court in Putnam County.
An opening ceremony for the court will be held Monday in the Putnam County Judicial Building in Winfield. State Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Benjamin will be among those in attendance.
Circuit Judge Joseph Reeder will supervise the new drug court serving Putnam County adults. A drug court for youths in the county opened in 2010.
Nearly two dozen adult drug courts are in operation across the state.
Proponents of drug courts say they are much cheaper than incarcerating offenders and graduates are less likely to offend again. Participants complete a treatment program of no less than a year.
