Most people might associate the word "hacker" with computer programming and rewiring. Cyber security enthusiasts have something else in mind.
This year at the Charleston House Ramada Inn, Hack3rCon will enjoy its third year as an online security conference based in West Virginia.
The event is organized by 304Geeks, and is sponsored by several other companies such as Digital Trust, Rapid7 and Suddenlink Communications. Hundreds from all over the United States will come for the weekend of informational activities.
This year's theme is preparedness with topics like "Doomsday Eve."
Organizers want to raise awareness of cyber safety and security. Lectures and workshops will be held over the three-day convention. Twenty speakers and instructors will present online safety tips this year.
Today's events include keynote speaker Larry Pesce. With experience in the computer industry for the last 15 years, as well as being the co-host for the PaulDotCom Security Weekly podcast, Pesce will lecture on "Hacking Survival."
Want to learn how to compute during the post-apocalypse? Then this speaker is the one for you. Other events happening Friday include vendor and exhibition halls, Hardware Hacking Village and a special viewing of the film "REBOOT." The convention will be open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. today.
Saturday's schedule contains a keynote lecture on "Finding the MacGyver in You." There will also be a "Zombie Neighborhood Watch Party" at 10 p.m. Saturday's activities will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
