Troopers said Tenney drove to Ohio before turning around and heading back toward Buckhannon.
Cpl. T.A. Menendez was patrolling the northbound lanes of Interstate 79 near Stonewood in Harrison County when he spotted a car traveling slowly in the southbound lanes, the release said.
The corporal crossed to the other side of the highway and caught up with the car, notifying State Police Communications in Elkins of the car's license plate and vehicle information. Troopers from Upshur, Lewis and Braxton counties were alerted. The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 79 near the Jane Lew exit.
Shaina and Grace were in good condition and now are in a safe location, Wright said.
Troopers said in the release that Tenney told Shaina there had been a death in the family and they were traveling to visit with other family members. It wasn't until Wednesday morning that she learned of the Amber Alert and that police were searching for her and her daughter.
Troopers interviewed Tenney's son and released him.
Wright said the investigation is ongoing. Tenney has been charged with two counts of sexual abuse by a parent or guardian as of Wednesday, but more charges are forthcoming, the trooper said.
Tenney is being held at North Central Regional Jail on $100,000 bond.
