CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill that would create a new casino in Franklin along the border with Virginia.
If approved, the new casino would be on the same Pendleton County resort complex as the Highlands Golf Club.
To have their casino application approved, the resort developers must submit plans to build at least 1,000 home sites and a hotel with more than 150 rooms. The total cost of the project must be more than $80 million.
Supporters of the casino said that because of its location it would not drain business from any existing casinos. They said it would draw customers primarily from Virginia. Supporters also estimated it would create 300 jobs.
The bill passed Thursday will next be considered by the Finance Committee.
