CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Sen. Joe Manchin's yacht may have played a pivotal role in shaping national gun policy, according to Sen. Mark Kirk.
According to the Roll Call gossip blog "Heard on the Hill," Kirk, R-Illinois, told a group of reporters Wednesday that credit for a bipartisan compromise on gun control legislation was due in part to visits to the Black Tie, a yacht co-owned by Manchin, D-W.Va.
"You guys really ought to go out to National Harbor and see the Black Tie, which has been much of the reason for much of the bipartisan cooperation around here," Kirk told Roll Call reporter Niels Lesniewski.
Kirk said fellow senators Kay Hagan, D-N.C., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, are frequent visitors to Manchin's yacht.
Roll Call reported that Kirk didn't elaborate on the food served at the gatherings, although he indicated booze was consumed.
"Sometimes alcoholic beverages might be served and ties might ... get loosened," Kirk said.Manchin and Kirk are best friends in the Senate. According to Roll Call, Kirk has referred to Manchin as "My Main Man Manch," while Manchin calls Kirk an "Energizer Bunny."
