CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- State Treasurer John Perdue has named former state Democratic Party chairman Chuck Smith to manage his campaign for West Virginia governor.
Perdue made the announcement Wednesday.
Smith, a certified public accountant, also has served as secretary of the West Virginia Parkways Economic Development and Tourism Authority, deputy secretary of state, and mayor of Montgomery.
Several state lawmakers have declared their plans to run for governor. Senate Minority Whip Clark Barnes of Buckhannon was the latest, announcing Tuesday.
Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in 2012. But he's also running in the Nov. 2 special U.S. Senate election against Republican John Raese and two minor party candidates.
