U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is having a press conference at 6 p.m. today in his Charleston office to discuss the future of WVU and the Big 12 conference. Senator Manchin also issued the following statement:
"If these outrageous reports have any merit -- and especially if a United States Senator has done anything inappropriate or unethical to interfere with a decision that the Big 12 had already made -- then I believe that there should be an investigation in the U.S. Senate, and I will fight to get the truth," Senator Manchin said. "West Virginians and the American people deserve to know exactly what is going on and whether politics is interfering with our college sports."
Sen. Jay Rockefeller released the following statement on West Virginia University's potential move to the Big 12, and the controversy surrounding possible roadblocks to the move:
"The Big 12 picked WVU on the strength of its program -- period. Now the media reports that political games may upend that. That's just flat wrong. I am doing and will do whatever it takes to get us back to the merits."
U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito has also been been following the situation over the past few weeks. She said she'd be willing to offer any help WVU administrators would like to improve their conference situation.I'm a very dedicated WVU fan, both for the athletics and for their academics, and I've been watching the Big East sort of hit rock bottom," Capito said.
"I think it's important that WVU land in a spot that is appropriate to the level of achievement that the university has. It is something that I'm very, very interested in seeing it have a good conclusion."
