MARLINTON, W.Va. (AP) - Pocahontas County officials say the county's sheriff's department is under investigation by the West Virginia State Police and the FBI.
The Register-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/xzDd2V) that Pocahontas County Prosecuting Attorney Donna Meadows Price confirmed the investigation in a press release.
The investigation began after receiving several complaints alleging inappropriate conduct by a lieutenant at the department. Price says she learned that some of the same conduct appeared to have been occurring for many years. Specifics of the activity that's being investigated weren't released.Price says she contacted federal prosecutors in August advising the office of possible "federal implications the investigation may reveal." Following the advice of the Prosecuting Attorney's Institute, Price recused herself as the prosecutor handling the matter to eliminate any appearance of bias. A special prosecutor has been appointed.
