Berkeley revives courthouse bell ringing tradition
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Martinsburg residents are once again starting the workday with the sound of a ringing bell.
The Berkeley County Council has revived a tradition of ringing the bell at the county's historic courthouse in the morning to signal the beginning of the workday.
The bell stopped ringing seven years ago, except on special occasions, after the Judicial Center opened.
Courthouse staff resumed ringing the bell daily at 9 a.m. last week.
Deputy County Clerk Larry Stewart tells The Journal (http://bit.ly/XBOKLu ) that he hopes community members will get involved and ring the bell.
