BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -- Bluefield is stepping up enforcement of its pit bull ordinance.
At least 30 citations have been issued for violating the ordinance.
City Manager Jim Ferguson tells WVVA-TV (http://bit.ly/119xDyh ) that one owner received 15 citations after animal control officers found 15 unregistered pit bulls in facilities that weren't in compliance with the ordinance. The ordinance requires pit bulls to be registered with the police department.
Ferguson says another owner received nine citations for having nine unregistered pit bulls.
The crackdown comes as city officials consider a proposed ban on new pit bulls inside the city limits.
Registrations have soared since the ban was proposed. So far, Ferguson says 45 pit bulls have been registered. He said earlier that only eight owners had registered their pit bulls as of March 26.
