Students debate W.Va.'s separation from Va.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Was West Virginia's separation from Virginia a good thing for the Mountain State?

Students from West Virginia and James Madison universities recently debated whether West Virginia is better off from breaking away from Virginia during the Civil War.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting (http://bit.ly/13MaY0j ) reports that the WVU team successfully argued in favor of the resolution. The team asserted that the separation strengthened West Virginia by enabling it to establish a distinct culture and sense of community.

The James Madison team argued that statistics show West Virginia lags behind Virginia in many economic categories.

Last week's debate in Morgantown was part of West Virginia's sesquicentennial celebration. West Virginia's 150th birthday is June 20.
