BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Members of the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial Group want to preserve and promote southern West Virginia's coal heritage.
The volunteer group has joined the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia as a growth and development partner.
President Sheila Combs tells The Register-Herald (http://bit.ly/11QNPF0 ) that the memorial group is committed to preserving the region's coal heritage and the further development of coal-related tourism.
Created in 2011, the group raised money and erected a memorial in Whitesville to the 29 miners killed in the 2010 explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine. The group is now working on building a coal heritage park near the miners memorial.
