Nuclear gauge reported missing in W.Va.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is hoping to recover a portable gauge containing radioactive material that went missing from a West Virginia work site.

The federal agency says Pennsylvania-based Valley Quarries Inc. reported the device missing from a site near Martinsburg last Friday.

Officials say the company's radiation safety officer stated that an employee of another firm reported seeing someone take what appeared to be the gauge.

The moisture-density gauge takes measurements by projecting radiation from the two radioactive sources into the ground and then displaying the amount of radiation reflected back to the gauge.

The agency says as long as the sources are in the shielded position, the gauge wouldn't present a hazard to the public.
