MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- An Eastern Panhandle-based health care system and its hospitals have new names.
West Virginia University Hospitals-East has changed its name to University Healthcare. City Hospital in Martinsburg is now Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson is now Jefferson Medical Center.
Hospital officials announced the name changes this week.
The regional health care system was created in 2005 when the two hospitals became part of WVU Hospitals in Morgantown.
WVU Hospitals president and CEO Bruce McClymonds says both hospitals have evolved since then into full-service medical centers. The system's name continues to reflect its ties with WVU Healthcare and the university.
