W.Va. Junior Firefighter Camp to begin June 22

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Teenagers who want to learn to fight fires and save lives can sign up for a special summer camp at Jackson's Mill.

West Virginia University's Junior Firefighter Camp runs June 22-27. It's open to boys and girls between 14 and 17.

Mark Doty of the WVU Fire Service Extension says kids come from across the United States for the rare chance to work alongside professional and volunteer firefighters.

They'll help train 125 teens in activities that include simulation of aircraft firefighting. Campers also learn about equipment and team building.

The cost is $295, and that includes all meals and lodging.

Scholarships may be available for those who qualify. Contact the WVU Fire Service Extension at (304) 269-0875.

The deadline to register is June 12.
