No charges filed against mother who left twins at hospital
No charges are being filed against the mother of the twin infants who were dropped off at Welch Community Hospital on June 26.
West Virginia State Police have identified the Mingo County mother, whose name is not being released.
She was actually the woman who took the twins to the hospital, officials said. It was first reported that the mother had dropped the twins off on a resident's porch with a note directing her to take the babies to the hospital.
Sgt. J.S. McCarty, assistant commander of the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police, said the woman did the right thing.
"There's not been a crime that's been committed," he said. "All these stories nowadays -- you hear about babies being left in a Dumpster. The mother had the foresight to determine she couldn't take care of the kids, and the safest place to take them is to the hospital."
McCarty said officials believe no criminal act was committed. He said State Police are conducting a joint investigation with the Department of Health and Human Resources. DHHR will determine the future welfare of the children.
