HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- A group that oversees management of the Appalachian Trail has appointed Ronald J. Tipton as its executive director and CEO.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy announced Tipton's appointment Tuesday. His selection by the Harpers Ferry-based group's board of directors is effective in late August.
Tipton has served as senior vice president both for policy and programs for the National Park Conservation Association. He also had stints with the Wilderness Society, National Audubon Society and World Wildlife Fund.
Tipton replaces Mark Wenger, who resigned after one year.
The conservancy maintains the 2,220-mile hiking trail from Georgia to Maine.
