PRINCE, W.Va. -- The National Park Service is asking the public to weigh in on a proposal to charge fees at three free campgrounds in the New River Gorge National River.
A public comment period runs through Nov. 24.
Visitors would pay $5 per night to use the Army Camp, Glade Creek and Grandview Sandbar campgrounds near Prince. All three campgrounds have limited amenities.
The park service says there are two reasons for the proposal. One is budget cuts and rising maintenance costs. The other is crime.
The park service says in a news release that there have been numerous visitor complaints and incidents in the campgrounds, including domestic disputes and alcohol-related crime. Similar issues at other comparable campgrounds in the National Park system declined after nominal fees were implemented.
