WELCH, W.Va. -- A public-private partnership has chosen a site in Welch to build housing for public school teachers.
The planned Teacher Village is part of Reconnecting McDowell's efforts to retain teachers and to improve the quality of life in the economically depressed county.
Reconnecting McDowell says in a news release that its board of directors approved a plan on Tuesday to buy two buildings. The partnership hasn't yet decided whether to renovate the buildings or construct a new building.
The partnership also plans to explore other options in the county to provide affordable housing for teachers.
The Teacher Village would include about 30 apartment-style units, along with group areas.
