TWO Kanawha County commissioners are not pleased with the slap on the wrist the Kanawha County Parks and Recreation Commission gave Director Jeff Hutchinson for violating state ethics rules.
"They had their meeting, now I'm going to have mine," Kanawha Commission President Kent Carper said.
Commissioner Dave Hardy also is upset.
The parks and recreation board has spent tens of thousands on lawyers to represent Hutchinson before the state Ethics Commission in a four-year battle over an ethics complaint. On April 4, Hutchinson finally agreed to pay a $1,500 fine.
The parks and recreation board blamed its own lack of policies for some of Hutchinson's ethics problems. After a long, closed meeting, it voted to reprimand him and order him to undergo ethics training. He was not suspended.
The public expects ethical behavior from its employees. Instead, it is out a considerable sum of money to defend a man who made some missteps. Carper and Hardy certainly should hold their meeting and demand a full accounting from Hutchinson and the parks board.
