AFTER a gunman shot and killed Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum in cold blood and in broad daylight in Williamson, it would have been easy for law enforcement officials to reconsider their war on prescription drug abuse.
But this week, officers arrested 12 people on charges
related to delivery of prescription pills, crack cocaine and other drugs. They have warrants for five more people.
"This is part of the ongoing investigation that Sheriff Crum started," said Williamson Police Chief Dave Rockel, who is also commander of the Mingo County Sheriff's Department's Drug Task Force.
"And we're going to have more indictments coming."
The prosecutor's office has warned people not to assume Crum's murder was related to his efforts to stop the drug abuse that is destroying his community.
It's an appropriate caution. Still, it's heartening to see his work carried on.
"Sheriff Crum always said, 'If you're dealing drugs, we're going to be knocking on your door,'" Rockel said.
Some very dedicated public servants continue that work.
That's what Mingo County residents wanted.
