Voters must choose a replacement for retired circuit judge Hobby Spaulding in November, and the choice won't be easy. Both candidates would make excellent circuit judges.
Democrat Bob Leslie of Hurricane has a bachelor's degree in history and a law degree from Ohio Northern University. He has 18 years in private practice and has practiced statewide. Because he was of the same political party, Leslie was appointed interim judge in June when Spaulding left the bench.
Republican Joe Reeder of Hurricane has bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting and a law degree from West Virginia University. He has 21 years as a practicing lawyer and has practiced statewide.
Both dislike judges who pre-judge cases, schedule cases in such a way that people wait for hours, and who explode from the bench. Neither seems likely to engage in such behavior themselves.
The Daily Mail endorsed both men in their respective primary elections, and found this a difficult choice. But there is only one spot on the November ballot.
The Daily Mail endorses Republican Joe Reeder because of a slight advantage in trial experience.
