I recently saw a story on NBC Nightly News about West Virginia and other states providing dinners to students. This was supposedly because students wouldn't eat otherwise.
What this is doing is sending the wrong message to parents and students. Due to our government and all of the entitlement programs, people are being taught to become dependent on the government - kind of like communism.
We are becoming an entitlement society.
Instead of making the parents be responsible for the welfare of their children, the government has taken most responsibility away from parents, and they have now learned to become dependent on that government for much of their own responsibility.
Students learn this quickly, so we are developing another generation of entitlement sponges.
How will it ever end?
Parents have or can make a way to feed their children. They just don't try because they know that these programs are available.
We need to force everyone to be responsible for their actions and take responsibility for their own support. Parents will learn this and therefore the students will learn this and we can wean most people out of the entitlement system.
It will be difficult, and many will suffer for a little while, but they will eventually learn to take responsibility and will gain much more pride in the process.
With this added pride and confidence will come more confidence to take on more. This will then become a repeating philosophy with parents and students and following generations and we can get back to what made America great in the first place - pride, responsibility, hard work, perseverance and achievement.
