Regarding the Daily Mail's Jan. 11 editorial on carbon dioxide and forest growth:
Matt Ridley's website, www.rationaloptimist.com, and Ridley's, "The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves," suggests he suffers from the 'past predicts the future' delusion lampooned by Stephen Colbert, as in "I've been alive every day of my life up to now; therefore I will live forever."
Never a working "bench" scientist, Ridley served 2004-2007 as chairman of the UK bank, Northern Rock, where his ill-considered investments in sub-prime mortgages contributed to the bank's collapse and nationalization.
Mortgage securities, too, once looked greener and greener - until the subprime bubble popped.
We can't afford to pop the planetary life-support systems.
Matt Ridley has no special expertise in climate, and the Daily Mail should not cite this scientifically educated libertarian gadfly as a climate expert.
