It's a shame the president of the United States, the Senate and the House of Representatives don't know the difference between needs, wants and nice-to-haves. If they did, they would not be running America into ruin.
Negotiators didn't just help out individual taxpayers, families, the unemployed, doctors and the consumers of milk.
Tucked away in the fiscal cliff bill were tax perks - pork barrel spending - that many American's didn't know existed.
President Obama stated that "while I will negotiate over many things, I will not have another debate with this Congress over whether or not they should pay the bills that they've already racked up through the laws that they passed."
Speaker of the House John Boehner told members of the House that "our government has built up too much debt. Our economy is not producing enough jobs. These are not separate problems.
"At $16 trillion and rising, our national debt is draining free enterprise and weakening the ship of state. The American dream is in peril so long as its namesake is weighed down by this anchor of debt. Break its hold, and we begin to set our economy free."
So why did the fiscal cliff deal designed to reduce the deficit actually add billions in spending through changes in tax law?
Our government officials are not being financially responsible.
