I want to be clear, both sides should bear the blame for the government shutdown. And while I think the Democrats' unwillingness to compromise bears a larger share of the blame - that is not my biggest complaint.
The plain truth is President Obama should be ashamed of himself. And by this I don't mean that he won't compromise. I instead refer to the president's actions after the shutdown began.
We have heard about the World War II veterans trying to visit an open-air memorial, one dedicated to their memory by the way, around which the National Park Service under direction from the White House originally placed barricades.
I read the NPS tried to shutter Mount Vernon, which is privately owned and funded. No government money funds it, yet the NPS placed barricades around its parking lots.
President Obama made it clear by these actions he intends for the shutdown to be as inconvenient and painful to the public as possible.
Why did he do it? Because he knows the media will blame Republicans for the shutdown and anything that happens as a result.
Unless and until the media holds him accountable for his unnecessary actions, and I might even say illegal when it comes to trying to close down places that do not even rely on the government to operate, he will only ever be emboldened to continue, and even increase, his use of such shameful tactics.
Our president should be ashamed of himself and his administration.
